Acts of Kindness Fellow

Location: Brooklyn, NY

FLSA: Non-Exempt/Overtime Eligible

Hours Per Week: 10/Part-time

Position Summary:

Shorefront Jewish Community Council (SJCC) provides support to help meet the human and social services needs of the indigent elderly, vocationally disadvantaged poor, and immigrant populations of Brighton Beach and surrounding communities. Currently, SJCCs main services consist of case assistance/management, operating a large food pantry, and immigration services, and a large portion of its clients are Russian-speaking older adults, including a large number of Holocaust survivors.  SJCC also assists in coordinating development, civic affairs and economic revitalization in the area. SJCC additionally fosters neighborhood stabilization in order to serve the needs of the community at large.

The Acts of Kindness Fellow will serve as an assistant to the Special Projects Coordinator with regard to volunteer activities. In this role, the Acts of Kindness Fellow will help strategize and coordinate outreach and communications to volunteers, including via social media.  Much of the volunteer activity for which SJCC is seeking to recruit volunteers is around expansion of its food pantry. SJCCs Food Pantry was an early adopter of an on-line digital food pantry ordering system that enables clients to select the foods they want, for a more dignified and efficient experience that promote better nutrition, positive health outcomes and reduces food waste. Such a system can also enable pantries to be able to work with multiple community groups beyond existing clientele to address the needs of the increasing number of food insecure community members in the community. But it requires significant volunteer labor.  SJCC seeks to recruit increasing numbers of community and college-student volunteers to fill the need to pack up food packages that have been ordered by food pantry clients on the digital system, and to help with the delivery of the packages to different satellite locations. The Acts of Kindness Fellow will work closely with SJCCs Special Projects Coordinator to develop a strong cohort of volunteers for the food pantry and may also help develop and recruit for other volunteer activities to meet the needs of SJCCs clients, bringing much needed capacity to the organization.
