Food Pantry Assistant

Hours Per Week: 24/Part-time

Shorefront Jewish Community Council (SJCC) provides support to help meet the human and social services needs of the indigent elderly, vocationally disadvantaged poor, and immigrant populations of Brighton Beach and surrounding communities. Currently, SJCC’s main services consist of case assistance/management, operating a large food pantry, and immigration services, and a large portion of its clients are Russian-speaking older adults, including a large number of Holocaust survivors. SJCC also assists in coordinating development, civic affairs and economic revitalization in the area. SJCC additionally fosters neighborhood stabilization in order to serve the needs of the community at large.

Position Summary:

The role of the Food Program Assistant is to provide part-time support to the Shorefront JCC’s food pantry program. This is a temporary position and is currently funded through June 30th, 2024.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Manage food deliveries including, but not limited to unloading food from delivery trucks, breaking down large deliveries, working with volunteers, unloading deliveries into pantry warehouse, and stocking shelves.
  • Maintain organized food pantry warehouse space, ensure shelves are stocked, and food is stored as required; oversee volunteers supporting pantry maintenance.
  • Follow all required food safety protocols, including but not limited to proper signage, FIFO, refrigerator/freezer logs, etc.
  • Maintain and update food inventory as needed.
  • Oversee the packaging of digital food pantry orders, sort/package produce items as needed.
  • Maintain safe and clean work environment, sweep, dust and mop work area, keep shelves neat and refrigerators sanitary, break up boxes and prepare cardboards for disposal, and dispose of trash daily.
  • Deliver packages to local clients as needed.
  • Assist in the recruitment, onboarding, and engagement of pantry volunteers.
  • Support use of client choice digital pantry system as related to client orders and warehousing.
  • Additional responsibilities as required.

  • People-person who can easily connect with those from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Flexibility and a positive “can-do” attitude.

Skill and Education:

  • Prior experience with a food pantry, even as a volunteer, a major plus.
  • Good motivation and interpersonal skills.
  • Russian-language fluency (preferred).

Physical Demands:

  1. Required Constantly: Walking, sitting, grasping, bending, stooping, squatting, computer input, finger dexterity and coordination of hand, eye and foot.
  2. Required Frequently: Standing and climbing stairs; carrying food products (up to 50 lbs).
  3. Required Occasionally: Reaching above the shoulder, and lifting up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling.

Compensation: $19 - $20 per hour
